The game is played with six decks of blackjack cards that a random number generator reshuffles after every round. The objective is to build a hand with a value closer to 21 than Vinnie’s hand without going over 21 and busting.
When it comes to counting cards, Aces can be worth 1 or 11, while face cards are worth 10. As a result, a hand with an Ace and any card below 10 is called “soft”, while a hand without an Ace is “hard”. If you hit 21 with two cards (an Ace and a 10 value card), you have “blackjack” and win a 3:2 payout.
When the game starts, Vinnie deals you a face-up card, deals himself a face-up card, and deals you another. You can then Hit (ask Vinnie for another card) or Stand (decline further cards). Only after you’ve played your hand does Vinnie deal himself his second card, face up. This means he doesn’t check for dealer blackjack when his up card is an Ace or a 10. It’s generally considered best to stand on 17 or more, stand with a soft 17 or 18, and hit with a hard 8 or less. Vinnie stands on all 17s. If the outcome is a tie, your bet is returned.
