Play Atlantic City Blackjack

Atlantic City Blackjack is a 2019 game by Switch Studios based on classic blackjack that uses a game engine built by Switch and Microgaming. With a stripped-back design, the game focuses purely on gameplay. Specifically, the Atlantic City variant of blackjack allows “peeking” at the hole card and forces the dealer to stand on a soft 17. It is available – along with many other exciting New Zealand casino games – on the JackpotCity casino site.

Game Rules & Strategy

Standard blackjack rules apply in Atlantic City Blackjack from Switch Studios. Players aim to have cards that total 21 or less while also being of higher value than the dealer’s cards. Having a hand of 21 or under and the dealer going over 21 also means the player wins. Having over 21 (bust) or having a hand value lower than the dealer results in the player losing the round.

Atlantic City Blackjack has unique rules for the dealer:

  • The dealer must stand on a soft 17 as well as a hard 17.
  • If the dealer has an Ace or 10 as their face up card, they can peek for blackjack on the face down (hole) card.
  • An insurance bet is available against the dealer getting blackjack if their first card is an Ace.

Basic rules of the game:

  • Number of Decks: eight standard decks.
  • When to Stand or Hit: Players can stand or hit at any time during a round, except for split Aces. When the player splits Aces, both hands stand automatically.
  • When to Double: Double down on the first two cards with a bet equal to the original wager. Players can also double down after a split, but not on split Aces.
  • When to Split: The split side bet is available when the player has two hands of equal value. Each of the two cards has a new card to form two separate hands. Splitting Aces and getting a 10 does not count as Blackjack but does have a value of 21. In Atlantic City Blackjack, players can split up to three hands each round.
  • Playing Hard Hands: Standing and hitting is an option for hard hands (totals without an Ace). Hitting can result in the player busting if the next card is too high. Similarly, the dealer may also go bust if they have a small value first card.
  • Playing Soft Hands: Players can hit or stand on soft hands (totals with an Ace) but must consider how they use the Ace. For example, an Ace and 10 could be 21 or 11, so standing is the better decision. A 4 and an Ace could be 5 or 15, so hitting can be more viable.
  • Insurance Rules: This bet can be helpful if the dealer has an Ace. Insurance bets in Atlantic City Blackjack cost half the initial bet and only cover the initial hand (not doubles or splits).

How to Play Atlantic City Blackjack

  1. Select the chip value you want to use to make bets. The game has nine chip values 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100, 200).
  2. Set the bet mount on the hand you want to play, ranging from 1 to 200 per hand. The default bet is 10.
  3. When you are ready to play, click the “Deal” button at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Hands play from bottom (Player) to top (Dealer), with both player cards showing. The dealer has one card face up and one face down (Hole card).
  5. Stand, Hit, Split, Surrender, and Double buttons appear at the bottom of the screen, but only if these betting options are available for the hand.
  6. Once the round is finished the player can increase bets, repeat bets, double values, or clear the wager.

Atlantic City Blackjack tips are helpful because they help players better understand the rules of the game. Remember, no Atlantic City Blackjack strategy can guarantee wins and it is important that you practice responsible gambling. The following tips can help you manage the differences between standard blackjack and the Atlantic City variant:

  • Remember the Dealer Hits on 17s Rule: The player always aims to get as close to 21 as possible, but Atlantic City Blackjack forces the dealer to stop on 17. If the dealer has over 17 the hand is valid. However, if they are hitting towards a higher value, they must stop on 17.
  • Split Aces with Caution: Choosing to split aces could carry more risk because the player can only hit once on each of the two hands. This could mean building from a low base hand is not possible because the value of 3 cards may not form a winning hand.
  • Insurance is Still Not Good: Experienced blackjack players avoid the insurance bet because it is not a mathematically good option. Atlantic City Blackjack has insurance, but the Surrender side bet remains the better option.
  • Don’t Bet Late Surrender Too Often: The Late Surrender option should not be used every hand. Being able to surrender late in a hand is useful, but players can overuse this feature and miss out on potentially winning hands.
