About the Game
The history of 90-ball Bingo can be traced back to a lottery-style game played in Italy in the 16th century. From there, the game spread to France, and then to Britain, Germany, and elsewhere.
How it actually developed is a mystery, much like the origins of its name. It has been suggested that the name was adopted from a slang term used by British customs officers when a search was successful. A more likely story, however, is that Hugh J. Ward, one of the men partly responsible for the rapid spread of the game in the early 20th century, overheard a player call ‘Bingo’ instead of ‘Beano’, which was the game’s original name. He like it, adopted it, and the rest, as they say, is history.
At its most basic, it is played by marking off numbers on a card that match the numbers called by a caller.
